Eldritch Moments: Earth Day

Happy Earth Day!  Why are you on the internet? Go do earthy stuff!

... Okay, okay, I'm sorry for the lameness here. They wouldn't leave me alone until I did this and I am so ashamed of myself. I take no responsibility for Todd's idea of celebrating, and while Maggie's usually a bit more playful, what can I say? Planting trees is srs buisness. But she did say "Right now" so, at least he might have a short later, right?

Also, while most of the Eldritch Moments strips take place during the course of the plot, since I'm only into the beginning of October in the comic, this actually takes place before the start of the comic.

... By the way, the rest of the pickup line is "--the bark to go with it, if you anna show me the same amount of love."

Eldritch: Lessons 020

Oh my stars, we have been having freaking amazing thunderstorms here this week.  I love thunderstorms, they’re so freaking pretty.  The bad part is, when there are thunderstorms, I can’t color this because a surge protector isn’t guaranteed protection for the comp.  But, here’s the update anyway.

So, regarding the page… a little of Maggie’s backstory in there.  Poor girl suffers from Disney syndrome: Only one parent.  However, there isn’t a whole lot fo folklore or other infor in here… buuuut, if you need a folklore fix, I updated The Moonlit Pathway on Monday, so if you wanna listen to me yammer into a mic for a while about loup garou, head on over there.

Well, gotta run and get some more stuff done before the storms come back.  Later folks!

Eldritch: Lessons 019

I personally really dislike licorice.  But hey, if it smells like licorice yet also repels fleas, it sounds good to me!  I’ve actually grown fennel myself, and not only do I find it to be really lovely, but swallowtail butterflies love it.

Also, by the way, tomatoes come from the same group of plants that the nightshades are in.  As a result of nightshade’s associations with lycanthropic salves, some varieties were called wolf peaches. (I’ve also heard the folk name “Love apples.”  Dunno where that came from though.)

So, um… I found some neat books at the library yestderday.  And, um…Zuchengtyrannus is a neat dinosaur... And… I guess that’s really all I have to yammer about tonight.

Thanks for reading!

Eldritch: lessosn 018

Sooo, yeah.  We all met Maggie’s mom before we met Maggie.

You know, I’ve kind of been pleased that no one had really yet gone “Hey, Maggie couldn’t have known about that stuff!” back on the 11th page of the first chapter.  It either means no one really gave it much thought, or that you folks kindly trusted that I had it planned out and waited for me to explain.  Regardless, now you all know where Maggie got the info from… but why?  We’ll have to wait and see.

So, um… randomly guys, that house?  That house is a Mary Sue.  No, no really.  You know how everyone at one point in their lives has a power character?  You know, when you’re in hichschool writing fanfiction you will be ashamed of once you reach college?  This is the house equivalent of that character.  I’ve always wanted a house out in the middle of the woods, with a trellised garden, lots of additions to the house, and, most importantly, a tower.  It’s like…. You know the Burrow in Harry Potter?  I wanted to live in a less precariously built version of that, in the woods.

Eldritch: lessons 017

Over the river and through the woods to Maggie’s mom’s we go!

Man, I need to draw a non-cartoony crow sometime.

*Chuckles* So, life’s been busy on this end.  Been working on personal projects and geen getting tons of hours at work.  The good news is, it means I get money, so I can costume… the bad news is, it’s physical and leaves me tired O.o

But, in happier news, I spent most of my working time on this page listening to this song: Loup Garou Bal Gula

Eldritch: Lessons 016

So, there’s not a lot of folklorish stuff in this page… but, I did happen to see Red Riding Hood, and, while it isn’t the best film in the world, I was impressed with the mixture of original mythology made for the film, coupled with normal folklore and fairytale.  Some details are subtle… for instance, the female lead, Valerie, wears a wolf fang pendant, a talisman that was worn by the Irish at one time, and, according to Pliny, held a number of magical properties.  They referenced fairytales the Big bad Wolf appears in aside from Little Red Riding Hood, like Peter and the Wolf, The Three Little Pigs, and The Wolf and the Seven Kids… If I wanted to really stretch it, I could see a little of The Wolf and The Lamb in it too. In addition, they practically retell a classic old werewolf tale from the Auvergne region of France.  They even bring in a reimagining of the Brazen Bull, which, while gruesome, is interesting.  Some folks definitely did some thinking and research.

In addition, the sets of the film were beautifully detailed.  The buildings were all characters in and of themselves, each with unique qualities, especially Grandma’s House.  I want to live in a place that looks like that, to be honest, woods and all.  The costumes were all really nifty (I like that they put arm holes in her cloak, so it could surround her better and leave her arms free for acting), and the dance they have in the village is an interesting mix of formal, medieval styled dancing, and something more akin to a rave.

However, I’m sure what you all are wondering about is the werewolf.  Personally?  I like it.  Big fangs and paws and fur… and such big eyes. I would have loved more screentime, but I was happy with what I got.

Is it great cinema?  No.  But as werewolf films go, it’s leaps and bounds over flicks like Bloodz vs Wolves<, or Werewolves on Wheels.  I say, give it a shot if you have time.

Eldritch: Lessons 015

Oh god guys.  I’ve been so sick.  Like, so sick I’ve had ocular migraines, which I haven’t had since I was in gradeschool.  It sucks when you can’t breathe, or hear, or even see.

So, I did this while drugged up and feeling really awful.  So… aside from the general crappieness, there’s probably issues (and I still need to fix the problems in last week’s update) so, apologies folks.

I swear.  I’ll have something intelligent to say next week.  In the meantime, I’m going back to watching Tron and sucking down orange juice.
